Building maps of a remote desert area: the Jebel Uweinat (Gebel Auenat)

April 2003

Uweinat Map

Here is presented a miniature of a map in shaded-relief, plus contour lines, contour interval 50 meters, 1:50.000 scale, datum WGS 84, UTM projection, representing the Jebel Uweinat region (Gebel Auenat) at the boundaries of Egypt-Sudan-Libya. This sheet was generated by Terramata using uncalibrated elevation data from a radar satellite. The hobbyist cartographer has, of course, to deal with a lot of problems. Uncalibrated data, grid 30x30 are for free, calibrated data are not for free. Therefore, major elevation points from the Russian maps were digitized and converted to a shapefile by using Oziexplorer. These points, after being projected on the map with Arcmap, give a good idea of the absolute error affecting the satellite data, an error in the range of 100 meters.
